About NESLS

The Nuclear Engineering Science Laboratory Synthesis (NESLS) internship program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) provides nuclear engineering research opportunities and associated activities for current undergraduate and graduate students. 

Eligibility

·       Be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. institution in a nuclear engineering, science, or eligible related degree – OR – a community college student working toward an Associate of Science or Associate of Engineering degree

·       If graduating with a degree before or during the appointment period, must provide proof of continuing education in an accredited degree-seeking program

·       Have a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

·       Be 18 years or older

·       No citizenship requirement

Benefits

·       Stipend based on academic level and paid on a biweekly schedule

·       $175/week housing allowance (paid with biweekly stipend) and limited travel reimbursement, if eligible

I want to pass along information regarding two exciting summer research internship opportunities at the University of Pittsburgh’s Human Engineering Research Laboratories (www.herl.pitt.edu) (HERL) that may be of interest to your students.  Both programs run May 18^th – July 23^rd:

 

• American Student Placements in Rehabilitation Engineering (ASPIRE):https://www.herl.pitt.edu/education/undergrad/aspire
• ASPIRE is a ten-week research program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), that focuses on research in the rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology fields.  In addition to full participation in an on-going research project, students write a project paper, develop a poster, and compete in an elevator pitch competition.  The program concludes with Student Symposium where the winners of the best paper, poster, and elevator pitch are recognized.

 

• Research and Design Experience for Undergraduates with spinal cord injuries (SCI):http://vrfpittsburgh.org/herl-chnf-summer-internship-program/
• This exceptional 10-week summer research experience for students with SCI provides students with valuable research, mentoring, and networking skills and will promote research opportunities in STEM fields for individuals with SCI.  *Please note: applicants must be individuals with a spinal cord injury.*

 

Both programs align with HERL’s mission to continuously improve the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advance engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation.

 

Students in all areas (especially all engineering programs, math, and computer science) are encouraged to apply. The application deadline for both programs is Friday, March 13, 2020.

Scholarship's Mission: The primary purpose of the Jon P. Nelson Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to a student who has graduated from an Oklahoma high school and has officially declared an engineering major with an energy focus at a recognized college or University in Oklahoma. Special preference will be given to students with the greatest financial need.

Criteria: Eligible students must meet the following:
1. Graduated from an Oklahoma High School
2. Attending College or University in Oklahoma in Fall 2020
3. Declared engineering major pursuing energy career
4. Have a 3.0 GPA (unweighted)

Details: The scholarship is a one-year award totaling $1,000. Scholarship payments ($500 each) will be made at the beginning of the fall semester and at the beginning of the spring semester.

Deadline: Applications must be submitted online by 5:00PM, May 1st, 2020. In order to meet the timeline for communication of awards, we cannot make any exceptions to the application due date.

Instructions: In order for your application to be considered, you must follow all instructions below. Tulsa Community Foundation is not responsible for procuring missing information or documents.

1. Complete the Application Form below by 5:00PM, May 1st, 2020.

2. Attach a copy of your Academic Transcript that includes Fall 2019 grades (GPA and Cumulative GPA) and your declared major. You can submit an Official Transcript, Unofficial Transcript or documentation from your online student record. Do NOT send transcript separately from this application.

3. Attach your Personal Essay. The essay must only be one-page in length, typed on a computer or hand-written. If typed on a computer, the essay must be double spaced and 12-point Times New Roman font.

Answer this prompt: Describe any challenges that have shaped who you are. Describe how these challenges have motivated you to set goals and get a college degree. Also, state how a scholarship will aid you with these goals and how these goals demonstrate your attitude about life. There is no “correct” way to respond to this essay. In writing about something that matters to you, you will convey a sense of yourself, and you let us know something about you that we may not learn from the rest of your application.

4. Select someone to complete and mail in a Letter of Recommendation. The sole purpose of the letter of recommendation is to learn about you, the applicant, through someone who knows you and can write a candid, unbiased evaluation of your character and life goals. Please do not ask family members or friends to write your recommendation letter. Ministers, coaches, employers, supervisors, counselors or teachers would be more appropriate for providing sufficient information about you as a person. The letter of recommendation should be sealed in an envelope and returned to Tulsa Community Foundation at the address below.

Nuclear Forensics Undergraduate Summer School

Program location: University of Texas-Austin

The Nuclear Forensics Undergraduate Summer School (NFUSS) is a six-week course, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), designed to provide undergraduate students with comprehensive, experimental, hands-on training in topics essential to nuclear forensics. Through laboratory experiments and complementary lectures, students are introduced to the practice and technical aspects of nuclear forensic science. The NFUSS program will be held at the University of Texas-Austin and will also include a tour of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Eligibility

Candidates must:

·         Be at least 18 years old at time of application

·         Be a U.S. citizen

·         Be enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student in a science, mathematics, or engineering program at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university

·         Have completed at least two years of college-level coursework

·         Have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

Benefits

You will receive a $5,000 stipend, and the program will cover your tuition, fees, housing, meals, and travel reimbursement for the program at the University of Texas-Austin and for the field trip to Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
