Engineered Nanomaterials Scientist

The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Engineered Nanomaterials Scientist position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Athens, GA.

The team member will have the opportunity to work within a multi-disciplinary research team to provide technical support for the development of methods for measuring ENMs, microplastics, and for obtaining data to predict the release, phototransformation, and transport of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) and microplastics in environmental systems and/or the photoinactivation of pathogens in natural and built aquatic systems. The laboratory is located is Athens, Georgia close to the University of Georgia where multiple research activities occur continually, including research at  the Center for Advanced Polymers, Fibers & Coatings which develops materials and plastic replacements that completely break down and return to nature when discarded, either in soil, water, or marine environments.

Analytical Lab Technician

The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a part time (20 hours per week) Analytical Lab Technician Support position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Athens, GA.

 

As a team member, you will conduct laboratory work, generate and organize laboratory data, perform data reduction, perform literature reviews, and interface with experts in the respective technical specialties. You will provide analytical laboratory support and analytical assistance to the ORD-Athens mass spectrometry laboratory in support of the Metabolomics team. You will be under the mentorship of CEMM researchers for training in liquid chromatography (LC) and high-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) mass spectrometry (MS) systems. You will assist laboratory researchers with maintenance of the laboratory, sample processing and inventory management, routine data analysis, and some administrative support functions. You will maintain careful and accurate records in designated laboratory notebooks.  These notebooks and all other data produced under this order will be the property of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Biomarker Research Scientist

The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time for a Biomarker Research Scientist with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Chapel Hill, NC.

 

As a team member, you will design and conduct laboratory experiments focusing on immune responses to social and environmental stressors using blood, stool and saliva samples and analyze data collected through research projects. These samples are obtained through the recruitment and examination of human subjects, biological sample collection, physical examinations, and collection of questionnaire data. You will design, optimize, modify existing assays and develop new approaches where appropriate.  You will conduct data analysis, interpret results, and troubleshoot approaches. You will design studies and experiments to optimize assay conditions, develop new assays when appropriate, and contribute to presentations and publications of the results.


The purpose of the EPA National Student Services Contract is to address EPA’s need to increase the supply of promising scientists, engineers, and administrative personnel in disciplines related to the EPA mission. This program provides opportunities for exceptional undergraduate and graduate students and recent bachelor’s, master’s, and postdoctoral graduates to work in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) research and administrative projects at multiple EPA laboratories and research centers.
