Climate change is “the greatest threat to the integrity of our national parks that we have ever experienced.” The changes in our climate are creating higher temperatures in most places, more severe storms, more heatwaves and wildfires, and heavier rainfall. All these extreme weather conditions pose significant threats to our National Parks, which are facing degradation or loss of wildlife and plants and important historical and cultural sites of our nation. This project will engage in conversations and hold an in-person workshop with members of the National Park Service to (a) teach each other about what the science says about the extreme changes in our weather patterns and (b) learn what critical information and scientific data the National Park Service needs to have effective climate adaptation strategies.

Literature review of extreme events across the U.S. focusing on the National Park Service.

Work with observational and climate model output to create first-order (descriptive) weather/climate phenomena statistics for select National Parks.

Develop and present materials for the National Park Service (e.g., documents and figures for presentations).

Note-taking for a 2-day workshop with the National Park Service Climate Change Response Program (availability for a hybrid 2-day workshop in February/March 2024).
