As a member of the United States (U.S.) Department of Health and Human Services, the IHS is a leader in addressing critical public health challenges facing American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. As the principal Federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives, our mission is to raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level. The Agency works closely with Federal, State, and Tribal entities to ensure that Tribal communities have access to safe drinking water and sanitary waste disposal infrastructure.
Recently enacted funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) appropriated $700 million annually to the IHS for fiscal years 2022-2026, for a total of $3.5 billion. Our annual appropriation and the IIJA for sanitation facilities projects equates to a fourfold increase in project funding. This unprecedented funding increase will directly support IHS sanitation facilities construction projects throughout Indian Country. The demand for skilled engineers in the IHS has never been more critical.
The IHS Division of Sanitation Facilities Construction (DSFC) is responsible for the preventative health program that supports AI/AN Tribes and communities. The DSFC also provides and maintains access to safe drinking water and ensures sanitary waste disposal. The staff of the DSFC are critical to assuring needs identification, planning, design, construction management, and operational training for water and waste facilities serving AI/AN homes. The DSFC is seeking engineers to join us in this historic opportunity to advance the sanitation infrastructure across the nation.
