Job Title: Quality Engineering Intern

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective 

Quality Engineer interns at M-D Building Products will be able to receive first-hand manufacturing experience regarding the production of various weatherization products. They will be able to both utilize skills that they have learned at school and learn industry standards that will be beneficial moving forward in their careers.

Essential Functions & Objectives

  1. Work alongside the existing quality personnel to help develop the tools needed for production to better capture quality data.
  2. Create documentation on First Article (F.A.) runs and Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P).
  3. Utilize lean tools in both Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action Plans (CAP)
  4. Complete and submit documentation on cycle time analysis as well as on process control parameters.
  5. Investigate the entire process of at least one weatherization product from raw material to packaged finished goods. Utilizing that, identify the biggest areas of scrap based on dollar value.
  6. Collaborate with operations, maintenance, safety, engineering, and other quality personnel to help support plant-wide continuous improvement. 
  7. Assist in developing a fleshed-out inspection process/plan for both our vinyl and aluminum extrusion departments that help to produce many of our weatherization items. 
  8. Complete a minimum of 80 hrs. floor time to split between all departments and manufacturing processes that M-D has.
  9. Prepare and present a summary of the internship including projects worked on, tasks completed, and overall learnings.

  1. Strong team building skills (with both peers and other departments).
  2. Strong analytic skills.
  3. Process development and documentation skills - and discipline to implement procedures.
  4. Ability to develop strategy for building a continuous improvement culture.
  5. Experience with developing / documenting procedures. 
  6. Use of Quality Engineering methods in inspection.
  7. Computer proficiency. 
  8. Quality orientation and high attention to detail. 
  9. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  10. Experience working with high performance teams. 
  11. Problem analysis and problem resolution skills.
  12. Working knowledge of Microsoft office suite (specifically Word and Excel)
  13. Experience in a machine shop or a manufacturing environment
  14. Ability to adapt in a fast-paced, frequently changing production environment

Work Environment

This job operates primarily in a professional office environment along with spending time in both a machine shop and manufacturing environment.  The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets.  On occasion, the role will use both machine shop and extrusion manufacturing equipment.

Travel
Travel is not required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm 

Education and Experience
Must be currently enrolled at an accredited University and actively pursuing a relevant engineering/STEM degree.
