O4U Out for Undergrad Engineering Conference

OK Policy Institute


OK Policy is now accepting applications for paid, part-time or full-time internships in our Tulsa office during the Summer 2019 semester! We are a non-partisan think tank working to promote adequate, fair, and fiscally responsible funding of public services and expanded opportunity for all Oklahomans by providing timely and credible information, analysis, and ideas. If you’re looking to be part of a team that’s fighting to make Oklahoma better for all Oklahomans, this might be the place for you. The deadline to apply is Sunday, April 21st.
This summer we have internship opportunities in two areas. If you wish to apply for both, please submit a separate application for each:
·       Public Policy Internship (Tulsa office) - Policy interns may be asked to write blog posts on state policy issues, help with data collection and formatting, assist with our advocacy efforts, help to coordinate events, and help with office administration. 
·       Open Justice Oklahoma Data Internship (Tulsa office) - OJO interns are expected to assist in the collection, cleaning, and analysis of criminal justice data, conduct research and write blog posts on criminal justice-related issues, and help with office and program administration.
Interns in our office are paid $11 per hour, and we are happy to cooperate with your institution’s requirements for academic credit.
Internships are open to both current undergraduate and graduate students (must have completed a minimum of 24 hours of college credit) and to recent grads (Spring 2018 or later). Participants are chosen by a competitive application process aimed at selecting students with strong academics, robust community involvement, and a clear interest in the study and practice of public policy.

NASA Internships


NASA internships are competitive awards to support educational opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for educators, high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. These opportunities integrate interns with career professionals emphasizing mentor-directed, degree-related tasks, while contributing to the operation of a NASA facility or the advancement of NASA’s missions.

NASA Internships are offered during 3 sessions throughout the calendar year. Summer internships are a minimum of 10 weeks, and fall and spring internships are a minimum of 16 weeks.
NASA Interns receive stipends based on their education level to help defray internship-related expenses.

Most NASA Interns are undergraduate or graduate students.

Postgraduate Research Opportunity in Environmental Risk Assessment

Two full-time paid opportunities in environmental risk assessment are available with the U.S. EPA's Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR). 

ORCR works with state and regional partners to implement the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Our mission is to protect human health and the environment by ensuring responsible management of hazardous and nonhazardous waste. ORCR's goals are to conserve resources by reducing waste, prevent future waste disposal problems through regulations, and clean up areas where waste may have spilled, leaked, or been improperly disposed.  

The selected participants will collaborate with EPA scientists in one or more areas related to environmental human health and ecological risk assessment. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participants will develop novel risk assessments, improve tools used for evaluation of exposure, and/or characterize chemical hazard results. As part of this project, the participant will have the opportunity to become familiar with EPA risk assessment practices and policies. The participant will also gain an understanding of the ways in which scientific analyses influence and support environmental regulatory decision-making.

The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level (at this time master's degree >$55K/year, doctoral degree >$67K/year) and experience. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a graduate degree from an accredited university related to biology, chemistry, engineering or a similar field, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the start date of the appointment. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Desirable experience includes interdisciplinary coursework or professional experience in human health and environmental risk assessment, chemical toxicity assessment, exposure assessment/modeling, computer modeling, and/or statistics. Desirable skills in addition to a strong scientific education include attention to detail and strong teamwork and communication skills.

Biostatistics Research Opportunity in Clinical Studies




DEADELINE: May 31, 2019 3:00PM ET (applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis)

The Division of Clinical Development (DCD) within the Biomedical Advanced Research and Defense Authority (BARDA) (part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) provides technical support for all the clinical studies funded and sponsored by BARDA, and the application of innovative clinical trial design is critical in meeting the challenges of the advanced development of medical countermeasures for emerging health threats of the US population.

The participant will assist with the innovative clinical trial design development effort. The learning objectives for the participant are: 1) To facilitate research and development of innovative clinical trial designs for medical countermeasures. 2)  To gain hands-on experience with the implementation of clinical trials in real-time.
Main activities will include contributing to discussions on developing and applying new methodologies on innovative clinical trial design and analysis, and conducting simulation studies to assess the performance of the proposed trial designs and data analyses.  Other opportunities may include providing technical support for DCD projects, assisting in the development of relevant study documents such as clinical study protocols and statistical analysis plans, interacting with program officers, participating in team communications with regulatory authorities and other federal partners, drug developers, academic centers, and Contract Research Organizations, all to ensure progress on the mission of BARDA. 

Areas of interest include:
  1. Literature research: perform literature research on innovative trial design methodology, such as adaptive trial design and Bayesian trial design, with the goal of identifying appropriate trial design candidates for a clinical trial for the development of novel therapeutics for serious influenza illnesses.
  2. Simulation study: conduct simulation studies with R and SAS to capture the operating characteristics of candidate novel trial designs, with the goal of identifying the best trial design in terms of trial performance utilities. 
  3. Comparative research: compare the proposed novel design with the conventional designs, with the goal of characterizing the advantages and disadvantages of the novel trial design.
  4. Data analysis: apply the novel trial design methodology to real clinical trial data to access the feasibility and performance of the novel trial design.
  5. Provide statistical support: help develop task orders and study protocols to support an integrated summary of safety of pandemic influenza vaccines and adjuvants to be conducted by DCD’s clinical study network
  6. Technical support for representative clinical trials supported by DCD: actively participate in selected Project Coordination Team (PCT) meetings to provide subject matter expertise related to clinical study design; participate in team communications with FDA, sponsors, CROs, and other partners to ensure progress.

Travel for presentations at conferences/meetings may be required.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 1, 2019

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have a master's or doctoral degree, or be in the late stage of pursuing an advanced degree in statistics or biostatistics. 

Preferred skills:
  • Experience in clinical studies and data analysis
  • Proficiency in programming languages R and SAS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Critical thinking, data analysis, and protocol/study design skills 
  • Independence, self-motivation, and the ability to take initiative

Highway Safety Data Fellowship with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) seeks a Highway Safety Data Fellow. This paid appointment will be supporting the Safety Data Initiative (SDI), with a primary focus on the transportation safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-occupants in rural areas. The selected applicant will primarily understand, analyze, and visualize DOT safety databases, data sources outside of the Department, and geospatial data. This project offers a unique opportunity to take a more holistic approach to assessing vulnerable roadway user safety in varying types of rural communities than is generally used. Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will integrate data and perform analysis to determine the relationships among demographic/travel behavior variables, crashes, and roadway characteristics, and identify insights that have the potential to help State and local governments responsible for roadway safety hone their investments to address the large portion of traffic fatalities that occur among non-occupants. This fast-paced research opportunity will give you hands-on experience and the opportunity to collaborate with experienced data professionals from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), DOT’s other operating administrations, and offices under the Secretary of Transportation such as the Office of Policy Development, Strategic Planning, and Performance. This is your opportunity to hone the knowledge you have gained during your graduate academic career and collaborate on research that has high visibility to DOT senior leaders.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral level degree in the relevant fields, with coursework in data integration, data analysis, and visualization, or will complete the degree by June 2019. Degree must have been received within three years of the appointment start date.

Preferred Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to transform information and data into visualizations that tell a compelling story
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and connect multiple data systems and sources
  • Experience analyzing data to identify patterns and trends
