Crafton Tull Foundation Scholarship

To whom it may concern,
My name is Clare Dunn. I am the head of Media and Public Relations for Crafton Tull. We are an engineering, architecture, and surveying firm with eight offices in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
I am on the Board of Directors for our 501(c)(3), the Crafton Tull Foundation. We are beginning the selection process for the Fall 2019 semester. Applications will be due April 12, 2019.  I have included the basics below:

AISES Summer Internships

The AISES Internship Program provides students with applied work experience and an opportunity to explore career options. Placing students in 10-week summer positions with partner agencies, the program also promotes advanced study to the graduate level and assists students in developing professional networks.



Open Internships

One or two positions are available with AISES partner, BMM Test Labs. The internships will be located in Las Vegas, NV. The Intern will assist test engineers as part of a team responsible for: assessing gaming technology integrity, accountability and functionality; performing statistical analysis of gaming device and game probabilities; reviewing gaming device and system source code and assisting with the development of testing procedures.

Three positions are available with AISES partner, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). Two positions will be available in BPA’s Transmission Services in Vancouver, WA and another position will be open in BPA’s Fish & Wildlife Program at the BPA Headquarters in Portland, OR. Applicants must be pursuing one the following degrees: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Environmental, Natural Resources or Wildlife Sciences majors.

Two positions are available with AISES partner USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), the national wood research laboratory within the U.S. Forest Service. The internship will be located at the city Madison, the Capital of Wisconsin. Interns will work in the Forest Service Products Laboratory and in the field with supervisor. For the Engineering-related position, the focus will be on timber highway bridges, historic covered truss-bridges, and bridge inspection practices. For the Marketing-related position, the focus will be on technology transfer of key research results on tall-wood buildings, cross laminated timber (CLT) products, cellulose Nano-materials that have a significant market impact for the following industries: bio-chemical, bio-energy and bio-products.

Description
The purpose of this position is to provide technical input and direction to the design and evaluation of new product concepts.  They will work in a team environment applying their knowledge of engineering principles and the physical sciences to develop new products.

Additional Information

Requirements

Postgraduate Laboratory Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

A learning opportunity is available in the Division of Scientific Resources (DSR) within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The research project involves conducting and applying various techniques toward the goal of improving the capacity of the agency to respond to various public health needs. The immediate goal of this assignment is to assist the Reagent and Diagnostic Services Branch within our Enhanced Capacity Surge Laboratory (ECSL) in providing diagnostic testing on various platforms to expand the capacity of the agency to respond to public health threats when needed for increased diagnostic testing support.

As part of the ECSL, the chosen candidate may have the following learning opportunities:
  • Applying various diagnostic testing platforms (PCR, ELISA, Maldi-TOF, Luminex etc) within a BSL2/3 environment to test diagnostic and clinical samples
  • Assisting with validation of assays on various platforms
  • Utilizing branch quality management systems
  • Utilizing CDC’s Laboratory Information Management System software (ELIMS) for management of specimen data and test results
  • Assisting with the establishment of new Standard Operating Procedures
  • Contributing to CDC diagnostic research studies

The fellow is expected to follow all safety guidelines set in the RDSB, most notably the safe handling of clinical specimens employing Universal Precautions using Blood Borne Pathogen Standards and appropriate Biosafety Guidelines.

The Enhanced Capacity Surge Laboratory operates under the regulations provided by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA).  The ideal candidate must have a degree in a science related discipline.

Computational Science and Technology Advanced Research Studies (C-STARS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Graduate research opportunities are available at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, through the Computational Science and Technology Advanced Research Studies (C-STARS) program. C-STARS participants conduct challenging computational research in areas that support ORNL missions, with current openings in software engineering, geographic information systems, and life and medical sciences database research.

Participants will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, professional development activities, presentation opportunities over the summer, and a large network of ORNL researchers and interns. Summer Internship Opportunity at Oak Ridge National Laboratory – Deadline to Apply is January 10, 2019


Biostatistics and Data Analytics Fellowship with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)



An opportunity is available at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) in Silver Spring, Maryland.

CARE Sentinel, a project in the Office of New Drugs (OND)/Office of Drug Evaluation II (ODE II), will examine clinical questions about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using the Sentinel Distributed Database system, a large distributed healthcare claims database. The project will focus on creating precise and robust programmatic definitions of obstructive lung disease cases, clinical endpoints, and medication use, for purposes of COPD queries in the Sentinel database. The project will examine access to Sentinel and the applicability of available tools for querying the database for medication efficacy trial designs. The outcome of interest will be descriptive statistics that define and characterize the sample space for COPD in Sentinel including rates of exacerbations, hospitalizations, medication use, and disease-specific covariates to facilitate answering clinical questions.

Under the guidance of a mentor the participant may be involved in:
  • researching and learning about prior healthcare claims data analyses
  • understanding strengths and limitations and how they apply to Sentinel data
  • exploring respiratory disease definitions, associated clinical endpoints, and medication use in Sentinel
  • providing statistical models to answer clinically impactful questions in respiratory disease using Sentinel data

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing a master's or doctoral degree, or have received a master's or doctoral level degree in the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the last 5 years before the appointment start date.

Familiarity with biostatistics or bioinformatics including scientific computing (programming in SAS or other languages) and healthcare data analysis is desired. A familiarity with data analysis of healthcare claims databases including developing statistical models of prospective and retrospective clinical studies is also desired.

Artificial Intelligence Summer Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory




The Artificial Intelligence Summer Institute (AISI) will collaborate with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) scientists on solving problems of national and scientific interest, engage in educational and professional development opportunities, explore career opportunities at national laboratories, and interact with and present their research to ORNL's scientists.

As part of the summer institute, students will be organized into teams with diverse educational backgrounds and develop their skills to help solve scientific challenges using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. They will learn from ORNL mentors who have expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning and/or domain sciences such as physics, materials, or biology. Students will participate in educational and professional development seminar series. They will also learn and participate in scientific communication exercises to prepare them for a career in scientific research, including oral and poster presentations and technical reports.

The program is scheduled to begin on June 10, 2019, and end on August 16, 2019. An earlier starting date may be requested for program consideration, but the end date cannot be prior to August 16.

Selections will be made on a rolling basis with the first round of selections starting January 1, 2019, and selections continuing until 10 applicants have been chosen. Applications must be submitted by March 31, 2019.
