DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Program accepting applications for 2021 Spring


The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Program is now accepting applications for the 2021 Spring Term: https://science.osti.gov/wdts/suli
Applications are due October 7, 2020.

SULI encourages undergraduate students and recent graduates to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

The SULI program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories/facilities.

Aircraft Configuration Intern

Position Summary 
This role is responsible for assisting the Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul (MRO) and Technical Services departments in the documentation and creation of design data suitable for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) engineering substantiation.

Essential Functions Statement:
·       Assist in the development of engineering drawings documenting airframe or avionics modifications, installations, and repairs.
·       Research and review engineering data (drawings, reports, manuals, etc.) defining aircraft structure or systems to determine the most efficient method of modification or alteration.
·       Develop Technical Data in Support of System Designs.
·       Collaborate with engineers and shop supervisors to develop and/or document mechanical design data.
·       Coordinate with Technical Services personnel to obtain substantiation of engineering data.
·       Coordinate with Inspection Department to ensure FAA compliance of engineering data.
·       Generate Engineering Change Orders and implement Drawing updates for Lead Engineer. Review in accordance with Configuration Control Procedures.
·       Collaborate with repair station personnel in interpretation of engineering data.
·       Assist with all requests and/or take direction from Structural Engineering Leads and/or Avionics Engineering Leads.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Required Education and Experience
