CIWRO Research Associate - Meteorological Developer

The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) at The University of Oklahoma (OU) is currently looking for a Research Associate to work with the NOAA/NWS Storm Prediction Center (SPC). This position will be located at the SPC in Norman, OK, housed within the National Weather Center (NWC), a highly collaborative operational, research, and academic environment containing several NOAA and OU organizations. Here you will work directly with development meteorologists and operational forecasters at the SPC and will have opportunities to interact with NOAA and academic scientists within the NWS, NOAA, and the broader meteorological community. 

Primary Duties: 

  • Develop/maintain developmental and experimental data flows to support SPC research efforts; 
  • Conduct verification of meteorological forecasts and promising information extraction methods; 
  • Assist in transitioning software from local computing infrastructure to shared NWS computing infrastructure (IDP, Supercomputer, etc.); 
  • Assist in transitioning experimental information extraction techniques developed by CIWRO researchers from N-AWIPS to AWIPS; 
  • Engage with technical leads of funded Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) projects on computer requirements and dataflows to ensure success in HWT experiments. 


Additional Duties: 

  • Contribute to HWT experiments as appropriate to test and evaluate guidance and products central to SPC core mission requirements of hazardous mesoscale weather; 
  • Represent CIWRO/SPC by contributing to formal and informal scientific publications and attending off-site conferences, workshops, symposia, and hazardous-weather-related outreach events; and 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 


The minimum qualifications for this position are: 

1. A Masters degree or higher in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, or a related area; 

2. Ability to pass a federal background check. U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required to access computer networks; 

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills; 

4. Ability to work and communicate effectively in diverse team environments. 


Desired Skills: 

  • Experience using high-performance computing in a Linux (UNIX) environment; 
  • Knowledge of software development life cycle and version control; 
  • Experience with web development; 
  • Familiarity with AWIPS/N-AWIPS and meteorological verification software packages such as MET/METplus. 


Regular working hours will be observed except for occasional irregular hours during data collection, warning/forecast experiments, or workshops conducted at remote locations. Additionally, occasional travel is expected. CIWRO staff will provide general supervision, with technical oversight provided by SPC management. You will work under general supervision but are expected to work independently and determine actions to take in handling all but unusual situations. This is a non-supervisory position, although you may serve as a leader of technical teams. Beginning salary will be based on qualifications and experience with a generous University benefits package. This position will be located at the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
